Hey everyone!
My name is Sean Andrews. I'm currently a tutor and waiter trying to work my way to a job in higher education. After I got my bachelors I became a snowboard instructor. This is where I found my passion for teaching. I believe the education system as we know it is in need of an up-grade. The questions I am mostly concerned with are how we merge with technology responsibly, what are the skills of tomorrow, how do we cultivate the richness and variety of cognitive abilities, and how do we keep personal interactions within an international level? Through the information I learn, tools I use, and relationships I make in the MALET program I should be put on the right path to contribute the best I can to the educational system, and I can't wait to see where it will lead.
Sean,
ReplyDeleteI think you make some valid points: our world will become much more international and the new technologies allow a richness beyond our boarders. This will certainly require new skills and a deeper understanding of the international environment. Along with that does come added responsibility since access to ideas and information comes so much easier. It will be an interesting time!
Sean,
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with the educational system needing an up-grade, both at the K-12 level and the college level. Just adding technology for technology sake needs to be put in the right contexts.
One of the advantages I have found in online learning is that we tend to share and learn from experiences that are not necessarily contained to a particular geographic area. In a couple courses I took for my undergrad here at ESC, I was in the courses with people who were from outside the US. They added perspectives to the discussion that made me think and relate to content in a different manner.
I think that technology allows us to connect and communicate in ways that were once thought impossible. Take Skype for example. I can remember watching The Jetsons cartoon when I was younger thinking that would never be. Now, I have had morning coffee while talking with my family in Italy via Skype. There are also translating sites available to help with communication. However, one needs to remember that they can't rely on that because we all speak in different manners. For example, here we would say "the white house" in Italy, it would be " the house that's white".
Looking forward to an engaging semester!
